Going in May, colors of blooms carpet the forest floor and shrub layer – Trout Lily, Pink Lady Slipper, Mountain Laurel, Galax, and the native orchid, Rattlesnake Plantain. Hearts-Bursting-With-Love (or Hearts-a bustin’) has non-showy spring flowers, but its bright red berries burst forth in a spectacular fall show. Blueberry bushes were all along the trail, as well, so timing this hike in summer would yield a tasty treat.
