In Memory of the Trees
The above photograph was taken inside the Antique Tobacco Barn on Swannanoa River road in 2022. This piece and many more were washed away when Hurricane Helene and the flood waters came to town on September 27, 2024.
I held onto this photograph because I like the irregular shaped lines of the cross section of trees. An article in National Geographic in December, 2023 about cross sections of living trees validated me using lots of colors. A Photographer used micro slices and a microscope to capture the beauty too small for my human eyes to capture. There, inside the slices were multitudes of colors and patterns.
So, on the anniversary of Helene, I explored how I would pay homage to the trees who stood and those whose roots gave way to Mother Nature’s rain and wind. From the images, the scarves evolved. First I tried to mimic the photos and then my love of movement came into play. So whichever scarf you purchased, look for the differences and evolution of the trees with imaginative colors.
Wear this scarf and remember the resilience of the mountains.

The scarf will be ready to wear when it arrives!
Overmarbling is the process of dipping the scarf twice with different designs on the same side. The scarf has to be totally dry for the second dip to work.
